On Hollywood red carpets, traditional evening gowns will forever reign supreme—but on a few delightful occasions, celebrities do branch out and take unlikely risks. This week, the best dressed stars embraced such a spirit: A-listers such as Jennifer Lawrence, Dakota Johnson, and Scarlett Johansson all chose strong, powerful shapes that commanded the room (or, rather, the step and repeat). These were not your standard glamorous ball gowns, but striking designs with more unexpected finishes.

In Spain, Lawrence slipped into a sharp Phoebe Philo dress that had asymmetric sleeves and cut-outs at the waist. It was a severe, yet ultra-cool, look that reinvented the set ideals of a movie premiere gown. In France, Jodie-Turner Smith also delivered a winning screening look for the Tron: Ares photo call—and she did perfect method dressing in the process, slipping into a futuristic, motherboard-inspired dress from Schiaparelli with built-in wires, calculators, and phones. The drama! Just as good? Her co-star Greta Lee in her electric-violet Luar suit. Such is how superstars should treat fashion—give us a moment!

Even the week’s more demure moments still had a major impact. For the After the Hunt premiere in New York, Ayo Edebiri made the classic LBD feel fresh via a Chanel halter gown with sheer detailing. In L.A., meanwhile, Nicole Kidman chose a structured Vivienne Westwood corset gown for a Clé de Peau beauty event. Although, when you are a legendary Oscar winner, you can wear pretty much anything and it will always look iconic.
