Today, it seems every celebrity stylist, Substack writer, and fashion influencer says the key to a killer wardrobe is investing in basics–and the same goes for jewelry. These jewelry essentials (think: a stud earring or a tennis bracelet) are often seen as timeless, classic pieces that will never go out of style. The repeated sentiment is to build a capsule wardrobe, one that will transition seamlessly through each season of life. It’s practical advice and a rather sustainable way to shop, and while I don’t entirely disagree with this tip (my own personal wardrobe is largely based around blue denim and white tees), I tend to believe that the best and most interesting wardrobes contain a healthy mix of essential staples and not so cookie-cutter pieces.

Naturally, this mindset has transcended the depths of my stuffed dresser drawers and overpacked closet, and found its way into my jewelry box (and the many overflowing jewelry dishes scattered around my apartment). The classics, without question, are great starters—hoop earrings, diamond studs, dainty gold necklaces. All great for everyday wear and all timeless pieces that can be passed down from one generation to the next, but the special finds are equally important when curating your own collection of jewelry essentials. These accents are often what will take an outfit from mundane to a look worth mimicking. Perhaps it’s with a unique occasion earring, a cocktail ring, or a statement pendant that not everyone has, because honestly, what’s the fun in looking like everyone else, anyway?

So when you’re shopping for the essentials, I urge you to, yes, buy the basics, but to also look beyond. Below, our guide to ten jewelry essentials that will help you cook up a top-notch look for any occasion!
