Will we ever escape the grips of ballet core? From Hailey Bieber’s pilates princess wardrobe to the chokehold ballet flats have on our collective shoe rotation, it’s unlikely. But leave it to Rihanna to come up with her own take on the style for fall, and one that’s also maternity friendly.

The pregnant pop star was photographed yesterday (September 9) paying a visit to the International Silks and Woolen Store in Los Angeles. She wore an all-black look that included a short sleeved black shirt with a tulle, tutu-like overlay, black nylon track pants with white piping, and white Puma cleats. She accessorized with layers of necklaces (including her beloved Renato Cipullo “R” pendant) and one silver spherical choker, gold rings, and gold bracelets. It was casual and comfortable, yet still making a Rihanna-is-out-klaxon statement with the details.

Now, Rihanna is no trend cycle obsessive—she’s been doing tutus and twists on the frou-frou silhouettes the Rihanna way for a long time. On a springtime trip to Barbados for a Fenty event, she wore a neon green sheer frilly skirt with a patchwork baseball jersey that combined Carrie Bradshaw’s eclectic aesthetic with her more sporty style. In years gone by, she’s worn dancer-on-duty Chanel, British label Molly Goddard’s sherbet toned swirling skirts, and the more subversive, rebellious, romantic styles of Irish dancer-coded Simone Rocha.

Rihanna has run the gamut with her maternity wardrobe, as she expects her third child with her partner A$AP Rocky. Never resting on the laurels of being fashion and the pop world’s coolest mom, she’s stepped out in the first designs from Jonathan Anderson at Dior (as have her two sons in mini-me customs), a glamorous spin on daytime pajamas, bump-baring archival looks and avant-garde Issey Miyake, and multiple takes on denim and suiting. Most recently, though, she’s delighted in super feminine looks wearing the scarf-as-skirt trend, a sweet gingham trapeze dress from Loewe and bow-adorned JW Anderson. Don’t take that as any kind of hint at the baby’s sex though—the maternity fashion has also included pops of Smurfs-y cerulean. Remember: Rih and her growing family are always going to keep us guessing.
