As a beauty editor, I’m often asked which products I could never live without, and many are surprised to hear that the best silk scrunchie tops the list. The mere thought of a tight black hair tie gives me shivers, and while it may sound dramatic, consider that a) I am a Taurus, and b) silk scrunchies help prevent breakage and split ends, don’t crease the hair, and add a touch of polish to an otherwise simple look. I’m also devoted to my blowouts, and pairing a silk scrunchie with a silk pillowcase is one of the easiest ways to keep my hair healthy and looking fresh for days.

While many beauty products feel like indulgences that eventually gather dust, silk scrunchies are a practical luxury—an easy, everyday upgrade that makes a real difference. Below, Vogue’s edit of the best silk (not satin—there’s a difference) scrunchies worth adding to your collection.

In This Story:

Best Overall: Slip Large Slipsilk Scrunchies

Slip

Slipsilk Large Scrunchies

  • Why We Love It: Slip has become synonymous with silk for a reason: the brand simply makes great products. I’m usually generous when it comes to sharing my beauty stash, but Slip is where my greed begins to show. I hoard their 100% pure mulberry silk eye masks, pillowcases (plural), and, most importantly, their scrunchies, which I keep tucked safely under lock and key. They come in a range of sizes and patterns, but I’m partial to the large ones because I have a lot of hair and want my scrunchie to be visible from outer space. I’m not alone in my devotion—hairstylist Reagan Baker says the large Slipsilk scrunchies “have the perfect strength to hold all hair types without creating too much tension on your locks.” For a skinny scrunchie, give these a try.
  • Material: 100% mulberry silk
  • Size: Large

Best for Overnight Wear: Emi Jay Silk Scrunchie

Emi Jay

Sweet Dreams Silk Scrunchie

  • Why We Love It: Handmade from 100% charmeuse silk, this medium-sized scrunchie comes in cherry red and black. It’s designed to keep your hair soft and smooth, and it’s gentle enough to wear overnight so you wake up with your hair perfectly in place. I’ve always been an Emi Jay-head, and while all of the brand’s hair accessories are worth fawning over, this simple scrunchie is the one I reach for most. It never tugs or damages my strands and somehow stays put, even on the longest runs. Because it feels so luxe and high-quality, I prefer to hand-wash these and let them air-dry.
  • Material: 100% charmeuse silk
  • Size: Medium

Best Jumbo: The RPZL Jumbo Scrunchie

RPZL

The Jumbo Charlotte Scrunchie

  • Why We Love It: At just under $10, there’s no reason not to add this jumbo scrunchie to your cart. It comes in four neutral shades including ivory, coffee, mocha, and black, and works comfortably for all hair types. The oversized shape makes it perfect for anyone with long hair or thick hair, so you can quickly put hair up without issue. Baker says she often sees her clients wearing these around their wrists and jokes that they’re the modern friendship bracelet. We couldn’t agree more, which is why we’ll be gifting them to all our friends.
  • Material: 100% silk
  • Size: Large

Best Machine Washable: Lunya Washable Silk Classic Scrunchie

Lunya

Washable Silk Classic Scrunchie

  • Why We Love It: A common complaint about silk scrunchies is that you have to remember to wash them, especially if you wear them to workout or on a warm summer day. Thankfully, Lunya’s 100% mulberry silk scrunchies are machine washable as long as you let them air dry. Baker says it’s worth the effort, noting that “since our hair can absorb bacteria, it’s a good idea to use washable scrunchies,” she says. “Throw them in with your delicates once a week to prevent any oil from depositing.” Unlike most silk scrunchies with a glossy finish, these have a soft matte texture and come in four shades: pink, blue, white, and black.
  • Material: 100% mulberry silk
  • Size: Medium

Best Value: Blissy Silk Scrunchies

  • Why We Love It: At around $10 a pop, Blissy’s silk hair scrunchies come in two sizes, regular and skinny. Like everything else on this list, they’re made from 100% silk—in this case, mulberry silk with a 22 momme weight and 6A-grade fibers. Baker suggests alternating between the different hair tie sizes to avoid putting repetitive strain on your ponytail. These work on straight hair, curly hair, and everything-in-between; though, because they’re so lightweight, they’re especially useful for fine hair types. Plus, they come in more than 19 shades, and help prevent breakage, tangling, and creasing.
  • Material: 100% silk
  • Size: Medium and skinny

Are silk scrunchies the best?

The biased answer is yes, and the professional answer is also yes. When compared to elastic hair ties, Baker says, “Silk scrunchies are the best hair tie because the silk fibers are by far the most gentle material on your hair.” She explains that most hair ties are made with elastic, which can cause tension, rubbing, and snagging, while silk creates a soft barrier between the elastic and your strands that prevents hair from tangling. That way, you’re better suited to safeguard hair health against frizz, breakage, damage, and dents.

You might also be wondering if a satin scrunchie will do. Satin, though more budget-friendly, may not deliver as many anti-breakage benefits as their silk counterparts. Generally, those with straight or fine textures should reach for silk options; whereas those with textured or curly hair might gravitate towards satin for their smooth feel that won’t tangle curls and coils.

The Benefits of Silk Scrunchies

“A silk scrunchie protects your hair from the pulling and breakage that a traditional hair tie can cause,” says Baker. Your hair won’t get caught the way it does with a standard elastic band, so you’re not ripping strands every time you take it down from a ponytail or bun. Silk hair ties also hold more gently, which helps prevent creases and damage as long as you don’t loop them too many times.

When we test and review a product, we take a holistic approach to deliver well-rounded product recommendations. First, we lean on Vogue’s vast network of experts—from board-certified dermatologists to celebrity estheticians—to gain professional acumen on the industry’s standout products, ones these specialists would actually use on their clients. We pair their expertise with our editorial best practices to curate the thoughtful edits you read on our site.

As it relates to silk scrunchies, we selected the best based on the following characteristics: material (if it’s crafted from 100% pure silk), size, durability, and washability. To do this, we paired our own personal tests of each hair scrunchie with hairstylist guidance and reviewer insights to determine which we would recommend to you.
