At the Ritz Paris, Vogue100 and Balmain gathered to toast a remarkable milestone: eight decades of Balmain as seen through the pages of American Vogue.

When Pierre Balmain unveiled his Paris maison in 1945, editors hailed the “New French Style”—architectural elegance fused with modern femininity—that leapt from Paris salons to the pages of Vogue, and from there into wardrobes around the world. After his passing in 1982, Erik Mortensen safeguarded the house’s couture rigor; Oscar de la Renta ushered in luminous refinement in the 1990s. The 2000s belonged to Christophe Decarnin, whose rock-charged silhouettes redefined Parisian glamour for a new generation. Since 2011, Olivier Rousteing has carried the torch, recasting Balmain with bold inclusivity, pop-culture fluency, and unapologetic confidence.

As the evening unfolded, guests drifted from the glassy light of the Ritz conservatory into a candlelit salon, where archival Balmain stood sentinel on mannequins—each a testament to the house’s ongoing dialogue with Vogue. In a quiet moment, Anna Wintour and Olivier Rousteing paused together—an editor and a designer acknowledging not only Balmain’s enduring legacy, but the evolving lens through which Vogue has chronicled it: a story of couture, creativity, and cultural resonance told across generations.
