What makes a fashion bestseller? Well, it’s usually a dramatic mix of virality, popularity, comfort, and old habits with a dash of discerning trends thrown in here and there. Microtrends may thrive online but on the shelves of major stores, what actually sells has everything to do with customer favorites, wearability, and key buys that may last a lifetime.

In the world of retail, editors, buyers and tastemakers set the scene early on at fashion week. Once it comes down to shopping for the new season however, it’s always interesting to see what makes it from the runway to the racks. With a steady supply of newness and a never-ending marathon of new designer debuts, it’s never a dull day in the world of shopping, especially now.

The fall 2025 season seems to be anchored in a couple of major ideas, at least according to the fashion directors from major online retailers and department stores that we tapped. On the menu for bestseller stardom this season is luscious suede, statement-making outerwear, rich autumnal hues, chunky jewelry, and practical but lush bags and shoes. As Linda Fargo puts it: “It’s a great season for luxury.” Overall, buyers and retailers are also echoing the sentiment that fall 2025 is a season meant for dressing up.

So, before you dive deep into the racks and start favoriting your must-haves from your go-to brands–read on for the top bestseller predictions for the new season.

All the chatter of new creative directors and lived-in, supple textures is what is on the mind of Bergdorf Goodman’s Linda Fargo, women’s fashion and director of store presentation. “Fashion itself seems to be shedding its skin, and transforming itself as new creative directors settle into position, and being part of the changes keeps all fashion relevant,” she says. She notes some of the most luxurious pieces as up-and-coming bestsellers. “Delicious leathers, touch-me furs and sensuous suede define fall 2025’s favorite materials,” she says. “There’s a clear shift towards ‘dressed-up dressing’ and ‘get-noticed’ statement makers.”

Chloé

shearling-trim leather long coat

“We all need a piece of the bohemian rhapsody at Chloé, this coat feels right on trend with the dramatic fur trim.”

Dries Van Noten

“Buying into the new creative direction at Dries Van Noten with maximalism on a micro bag may be just enough to grab a gaze and amp up any look.”

Ferragamo

“Patent emerged as a fresh luxe look for fall, especially on a trending wedge mule in stop sign red at Ferragamo.”

Gabriela Hearst

“As the fashion system sheds its skin and transforms with unprecedented creative direction, snake skins are ultra relevant, especially in accessories.”

Loewe

“Luscious leathers are the ultimate versatile and timeless luxury investment, especially in a modern black crop trench from Loewe.”

Alaïa

“This sharp and shapely Alaïa coat checks the box for the season’s polished vibe, especially with the unexpected over-belt.”

Altuzarra

“So pulled together and elegant, and convenient! A wrap and a coat all in one fell swoop. New York designers loved this combination for all.”

JW Anderson

“This bootie has it all: the season’s soft suede and low heel with a hipster edge.”

In the world of Ssense, Margiela sneakers and quietly cool must-haves from rising brands are at the pinnacle of fall’s next bestsellers. “Fashion hasn’t moved on from the low-profile sneaker moment, and I expect the Sprinter to remain a front-runner in the trend for the coming seasons,” says Isla Lynch, buyer director. She also cites labels like Nina Christen (“an IYKYK brand for fashion insiders over the past few seasons, following her tenures at The Row, Phoebe Philo’s Celine, Loewe, and Bottega Veneta”), Rier, and Fane as on the rise for their fun fleeces and bra-shaped bag. Also look out for Literary Sport, an elevated athleisure line that Ssense has just secured as an exclusive for the new season.

Maison Margiela

“With the brand’s heatmap rising under Glenn Martens’s tenure, the Sprinter sneaker is ideally positioned to lead the category. It doesn’t hurt that Jacob Elordi is already a fan.”

Christen

“With the halo effect of her appointment as footwear design director at Dior, her eponymous label is poised for even greater momentum on Ssense. These 75mm mules are not only subtly sexy but also durable, chic, and timeless—perfect for events at the tail end of the year.”

Rier

“Menswear buyers might roll their eyes at the suggestion, but Rier’s FW25 collection made a clear statement about its intention to carve out an equal place in the womenswear space. Ssense’s FW25 buy strikes the perfect balance between elevated sportswear, formal dresses, and floral-embroidered shirts, with a special collaboration from my favorite jeweller, Zoe Mohn. The fleece remains the brand’s most iconic staple—the essential ‘starter pack’ piece for any Rier wardrobe. I love the shade of dusty pink of this option.”

Fane

“Already a staple among chic Parisians—and embraced by the majority of the Ssense buying team—Fane is poised to gain global momentum this season, thanks to founders Laurie-Anne Braun and Margot Baudequin’s uncompromising approach to refined design, craftsmanship, and value. It’s rare to see such a sharp price point in the market without any compromise on quality.”

Image may contain: Clothing, Coat, and Jacket

“Creative directors Jackie McKeown and Fran Miller have delivered a perfect roll-out so far—from razor-sharp merchandising to refined color palettes and directional campaign imagery. The Adrienne jacket perfectly captures the brand’s versatility, equally fitting when worn on a sunrise run or styled with tailored trousers from The Row for a chic everyday look.”

Roopal Patel, Fashion Director, Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus echoes the feeling of this season being one of the books when it comes to expressing oneself. “The Fall trends are encouraging us to get dressed up,” she says. She’s predicting faux fur, animal prints, wild statement coats and chic ladylike dressing will yield some of the most epic bestsellers for fall. On the accessory front, it’s all about the idea of the elongated handbag and the little heeled pump. Think: silhouettes that are the perfect mix of old and new, with a 1950s vibe meets Y2K, with an almost retro future sensibility that keeps things interesting.

Prada

“The return to ladylike dressing feels sophisticated, polished and chic for fall, which we saw at Prada, Fendi and Miu-Miu.”

Prada

“To-the-knee skirts, midi skirts, and ladylike pumps are must-have investment pieces for the season.”

Alaïa

“The elongated handbag shape has an east west shape to it. Alaïa’s Le Click in suede is perfect for fall!”

Altuzarra

“Fuzzy and faux fur textured coats were shown all across this season’s runways.”

Image may contain: Clothing, Coat, Overcoat, Blazer, Jacket, and Formal Wear

“From novelty coats to classic suedes, animal prints and fuzzy faux fur, it was a season of statement coats on the runways of New York, London, Milan and Paris. Sarah Burton for Givenchy’s sculpted coat in butter yellow is one of my favorites of the season.”

Is there anything better than giving in to classic fall staples once the temperature begins to dip and the chill hits the air? April Koza, VP of FWRD is predicting relaxed trousers, rich brown tones, ’90s minimalism and chunky knits will all reign supreme this season. Of particular influence on the bestseller front is suede, which continues to stand out as retailer’s best friend right now. “This fall, suede will be one of the biggest trends,” she says. “It’s a material that speaks to both heritage and modern luxury.”

The Row

“The loafer is the definitive shoe of fall, a silhouette that delivers versatility, polish, and staying power well beyond the trend cycle.”

The Row

“The relaxed trouser is defining fall’s silhouette, fluid, refined, and versatile enough to move seamlessly from day to night. It’s the piece we’re championing as the season’s hero.”

The Row

“The Row’s top handle bag embodies everything our customer is seeking this fall with a subtle point of view, modern freshness, and the assurance of an investment that will remain relevant for years.”

Nour Hammour

“Rich brown continues to anchor the fashion palette, and for fall, our must-have item in the shade is a leather jacket. It’s equal parts statement and staple—a combination our customer can’t resist.”

Khaite

“Khaite has mastered the balance of statement and longevity, and this plum knit cardigan is proof. It packs a punch, but it’s also the kind of piece you’ll wear season after season.”

Jean Paul Gaultier

“With its subtle ’90s influence and clean, minimalist lines, this black gown feels both nostalgic and of-the-moment, the perfect piece for every fall occasion.”

The secret to Shopbop’s upcoming bestsellers has everything to do with subtle, impactful statements that are easy to integrate into your already-existing fall wardrobe. Think: stunning, sterling silver rings, easy barn jackets, and oversized T-shirts paired with essential bucket totes. Also, don’t miss Nili Lotan’s beloved barrel-shaped Shon pants reimagined in bold leopard print, exclusively for the retailer. “They’re a fan favorite for their flattering silhouette,” says senior fashion director Caroline Maguire.

Studio Conchita

“We’re thrilled to introduce Studio Conchita, whose sculptural shapes and refined aesthetic are destined to resonate with the Shopbop customer. The Onda ring, crafted in timeless silver, is made for everyday wear and stacks beautifully with other favorites. With sculptural jewelry on the rise, this piece feels especially fresh for fall.”

Le Bop

“The Dree barn jacket is the perfect lightweight layer, and its powder-blue hue adds a refreshing pop to autumn’s neutral palette. Ideal for seasonal transitions, it’s light enough for daytime wear yet perfect for brisk summer-to-fall evenings.”

Nili Lotan

“This style pairs perfectly with chunky knits, sleek boots, or a leather jacket for an easy statement.”

Madewell

“In a rich cocoa suede, Madewell’s bucket tote is the ultimate summer-to-fall carryall—spacious enough for everyday essentials yet polished enough for work or weekend. The warm, earthy tone makes it an effortless match for autumn’s chic palette.”

Image may contain: Clothing, T-Shirt, and Sleeve

“With its slouchy, oversized fit, the Cape tee nails the effortlessly cool look we’re loving right now. It’s the ultimate layering piece for fall—perfect under cardigans, blazers, or denim jackets for that relaxed-yet-refined feel.”

Leopard print bags, chic cropped jackets and elongated bags are the must-haves and predicted bestsellers at Elysewalker. According to Courtney Grant, SVP of buying, “The result is a fall lineup that feels modern, directional, and distinctly individual.” The ’90s vintage influence is still going strong with fun little sunglasses, strong tailored trousers, and spliced pants. For accessories, lean into little glasses and slouchy hobo bags. She’s also predicting that Alaïa’s biker ballet flat will be the next big shoe.

Alaïa

“This season is about refinement with edge: leopard was everywhere on the runways, but no one does it better than Alaïa”

Monse

“Monse sharpens last spring’s barn jacket into a modern essential, while A.L.C. reintroduces argyle with a graphic twist.”

Miu Miu

“Miu Miu’s new sunglass silhouette adds instant It girl energy to any look.”

St. Agni

“Novelty trousers lead the charge in tailoring, with St. Agni’s ’90s splice redefining the suit.”

Kallmeyer

“Kallmeyer’s Clemence pant stands apart as the ultimate everyday essential.”

A.L.C.

Tartan, plaid, and tweed brought country codes to the fall runways. A novel take on argyle is a fresh way to inject a heritage feel into your wardrobe that per Grant, “feels modern, directional, and distinctly individual.”

Gucci

“Accessories move toward slouch and effortless cool, with Gucci’s Softbit hobo offering logoless chic.”

Alaïa

“Alaïa’s biker flat brings toughness to a feminine silhouette.”

Fall is the time to celebrate lush textures and the kind of preppy fresh statements that pair as perfectly with colorful foliage as they do with warm apple cider. On Moda Operandi’s president April Hennig’s list now? Suede: “Leave it to the Olsens to perfect the classic hobo silhouette with The Row’s Bindle bag,” she says. She also cites animal prints, ponyhair sandals, shearling, denim, and of course, luscious worn-in leathers as new favorites. Luckily, there’s never been a better time to lean into dressing like the main character. “This season saw the rise of a style persona we’ve lovingly dubbed the Artillectual: a master of quirky contrasts, unexpected prints, and a wardrobe that’s equal parts prep school, Milanese librarian, and contemporary gallery curator,” she adds.

Alaïa

Le Click medium nubuck bag

“With less shine and more depth, suede is leather’s moodier, more romantic cousin. No longer confined to bohemian tropes, it takes on new forms in fall’s best handbags, whether architectural in Alaïa’s new Le Clic, gleefully embellished in Khaite’s night-out mini Livia (studded with oversized glass paillettes), or sharply nostalgic in Prada’s Bonnie.”

Julietta

“With a scalloped shell motif and cascading fringe, Julietta’s Coquille earrings channel the Art Deco era’s love of symmetry, stylized natural forms, and glamorous movement, yet remain distinctly modern and sculptural.”

Black Suede Studio

Freddie pony hair sandals

“Black Suede Studio’s pony hair sandals bring a little bit of the animal kingdom to the heart of the concrete jungle. For those unafraid of a grander statement, leopard, cheetah, and other untamed prints prowl through the season, whether in sweeping head-to-toe looks or as a commanding accent.”

Simkhai

Huntington leather jacket

“As a merchant, there are two categories my non-fashion friends obsess over: denim and leather, and which silhouettes reigns supreme. This season’s leather jacket of choice? Perfectly worn-in and perfectly oversized, like Simkhai’s. To avoid veering into ‘NYU student en route to a festival’ territory, elevate it with polished contrasts: think a bomber over a sleek, floor-length silk skirt, a crisp fitted tee, and a kitten heel.”

The Row

“In New York, by November (if we’re lucky), the coat is the outfit. This season, there’s nothing more desirable than plush shearling: not only does it look luxe, but it’s actually warm. The Row’s longline Madelina robe coat is the ultimate investment. Throw it over leggings for the morning school run and watch the other moms suddenly wonder if they’re underdressed.”

Zankov

William merino wool cardigan

“It’s all about the art of the clash, and the hero piece is the argyle vest. When styling, ask yourself: what would your eccentric high school art teacher—who secretly collects Prada—wear?”
